Fused by Stephen
DILSTON GROVE
I lit touch paper that originally belonged to the pyrotechnic sculptor, Stephen Cripps (1953-1982) with whom I had worked. The flames travelled through the paper, which was encased in a frame, finally igniting slow burning fuse-wire running along the ceiling. I let the travelling spark out the gallery doors with a remote control and then the spark ignited fast burning fuse-wire, which shot into the fuses of several rockets on wires. These hurtled back again toward the gallery, each impacting a large suspended gongs, striking and sounding each one.
This action, conceived and implemented with Richard Wilson, was part of Naomi Pearce’s exhibition inspired by a drawing she found in the ACME archive entitled The Mechanical Garden by Stephen Cripps
