Equi nox

‘Micro-owning’

The Slice, London

On the Spring equinox at the exact time of the sunset, I lit candles on a balancing scale that had a basin of water on one side and candles on the other, in exact equilibrium. As the candles burned they got lighter and the water sunk creating a miniature tidal action.

Whilst this action happened I asked different people in the audience to record the words equi and nox and sun and set on different recording cards so I had a ‘chorus’ for the work . With these card voices, overlapping each other, I improvised on the word Equi nox , equal night (equal day) and the word ‘terminator’ which is the word for the line that separates day and night. Using gongs with candles inserted as we went into the darkness, I improvised with Richard Wilson on percussion.
