Incantation

Come Hell or High Water

Exactly one year after the first Come Hell or High Water event, on the winter solstice of 2020, at the highest moment of high tide, several voices arose, spread around the railings, chanting an incantation, written by Sarah Andrew, for the event. As the voices were carried off on the wind, I dropped some blood from the birth of Wanda, daughter to Poppy Jackson, into the water for the blood to become part of the river flow. A small drop of the blood fell on the paper printed with the incantation that I was holding. It took on the appearance of a bird in flight. The second wave of Covid was escalating and we all kept our distance, whilst feeling very close, bringing to mind the last CHOHW before the Covid lockdown when Alicia Radage scratched ‘Grow Softer, Keep Close’ into the moss.
