The collective, Inspiral, along with associate artists, created a number of guided walks, Hydrodetours, during 2021, along the Thames and estuary. One of the walks was to Rainham Marshes/Rainham Barges and I was invited to create an event which related to a Bow Gamelan Ensemble performance on and around the barges in 1987. I asked the participants on the walk to open the link on their phone that connected to a recording of this 1987 performance. The overlapping, nonsynchronous cacophony of sounds from this space over thirty years earlier emanating from many peoples’ phones, resounded out alongside a live performance by Richard Wilson, Ansuman Biswas and myself, thus enabling a collaboration with ourselves in the same space but different time.
