Chana and Maambo

The debut of this film was shown as part of the group show Seedbomb, Terrace Gallery, London, 2022
Curated by Jo Melvin

Through 2020/2021 I had regular zoom conversations with the Zambian artist, Serah Chibombwe. After several sessions, we planned that instead of our usual spoken exchange of ideas, we would do some sessions as a recorded zoom performance away from the usual strictures that dialogue imposes. We both have vivid childhood memories and alternative names, Chana and Maambo, with which we identified as children. We decided to speak to each other from these childhood selves and see what unfolded from this space. Although we did not discuss it in advance there were several coincidences in what came up between us. We each brought materials and ideas to the session to stimulate our relationship and visions in this childhood exploration. Both of us were born and grew into adulthood on the red earth of Zambia but we came from very different times and perspectives. Alex Eisenberg edited these sessions, funded by the organisation Future’s Venture.
