Falling In Love With a Chair
National Review of Live Art
Glasgow, February 2003
In1969, alone on my first night at Reading University, having arrived from Zambia, I looked around the space. There was nothing in my room apart from a bed, cupboard, desk, bed, chair and my suitcase. Feeling a sense of total aloneness and a ‘reaching out’, I felt the life inherent in the chair; its wood having once been in a forest, its rushes having blown in the breezes. I danced with the chair, literally and metaphorically. Using luminescent materials and thermal imaging I referenced this moment in Falling in Love with a Chair for NRLA 2003.
