Elements

Docklands, London

This installation took place over several weeks during December and January 1995/6 linking the two years and covering the Winter Solstice and Epiphany. I did a small action twice a day in a disused shop in Docklands, re-filling vases with blue liquid which continually steamed away thus changing the ambience of the room from a deep blue to a white light and back again.

“A little shop in a Docklands backstreet . . . . . .the windows and glass in the door are papered over. . . . . . .the only sign of the work is a dim yellow glow and a calling card announcing the presence of ‘Elements’. . . . . you peer through the opening. . . . . two holes rebuff you with the wan glow of a magnified electrical element; the third gives an uninterrupted view of the space inside. Spherical vessels, full of liquid and raised on stands, shine with an unnatural glow. What’s in them is not clear but it gives every appearance of being malevolent. Quiet it may be. . . . but the installations seems replete with explosive potential. . . . .”
